Abstract

Nikos Kazancakis’in Kardeş Kavgası adlı romanı 1946-1949 yılları arasında yaşanan Yunan İç Savaşı’ndan hareketle kaleme alınmıştır.

Abstract

In this study, one of the most important writers of Greek literature, Nikos Kazancakis's novel The Fratricides and Çağan Irmak's film named My Grandfather’s People will be discussed comparatively over the notions of otherness and foreignness, and the elements of othering reflected in the works will be examined. Since both works, which are the subject of the study, are based on lived events that leave traces in the memory of societies, sociological criticism method will be used in the study.

Nikos Kazantzakis' novel The Fratricides is based on the Greek Civil War between 1946-1949. The work focuses on the manifestations of the civil war that the author has experienced and its effects on society. The film My Grandfather’s People, written and directed by Çağan Irmak, is about the Population Exchange, which left a deep impact on both our society and the Greek society. In the work, the life of a family who came to Turkey from the island of Crete until the 1980 Coup has been processed.

The views of Zygmunt Bauman will also be used in this study, which will be conducted on the works of The Fratricides and My Grandfather's People. Considered one of the most important sociologists and thinkers of the last century, Bauman is especially important in terms of working with the different approaches he brought to the concepts of the other and the foreigner. Bauman's view of the concepts of the other and the foreigner will be examined in detail in the study and determinations will be made on the basis of these concepts in the literary and visual texts discussed. It is thought that the in-betweenness, which will be tried to be shown through certain characters in both works, is compatible with Bauman's views.

In the study, with the evaluations to be made on certain characters in the works, it will be tried to bring a different approach to the concepts of the other and the foreigner, and it will be tried to determine what kind of thoughts come to the fore in the societies' coding for each other and stigmatizing the individuals who later joined the society.
