Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to translate the six item short form of the Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale (KADS) into Turkish, and examine its psychometric characteristics. A total of 1931 adolescents, 981 females (50.8%) and 950 males (49.2%), ranging in age from 12 to 17 years (mean = 14.80, sd = 1.61), completed the scale. For the analysis of the items in the study, both classical and modern test theories were used, and item discrimination and item difficulty coefficients were calculated. The Cronbach Alpha internal consistency coefficient for the entire scale was found 0.82; the Spearman-Brown and the Guttman split-half coefficients were found 0.83 in the whole group. For the criterion related validity study, correlation coefficient of 0.69 was determined with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale for Children, 0.67 with Children’s Depression Inventory, and 0.94 with the 11 item long form of the Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale. Confirmatory factor analysis results indicate that the scale showed good fit index values for the single factor structure. The results suggest that the Turkish version of the six item short form Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale is a reliable and valid instrument that can be used for screening purposes in the Turkish population.
