Abstract

Abstract

In this study the aim is to designate effects of performing the maximum - minimum problems subject in 12th grade maths program’s according to the lesson plans which are prepared in accordance with ACE (activities, class discussion, exercises) teaching cycle that is developed based on APOS (Action, Process, Object, Schema) theory on students’ success. The study group consisted of 20 graduate students attending a university preparatory course in the Nilufer district of Bursa. “Achievement Test (pretest - posttest) and Semi-Structured Interview Form" were used as data collection tools. Achievement test and semi-structured interview form were prepared by the researcher. Expert opinion was taken for data collection tools and then pilot studies were conducted. In the research, descriptive mixed research design, in which qualitative and quantitative methods are used together, was used. For the analysis of the achievement test pre-test and post-test results, it was first tested whether the data show a normal distribution or not. As normality test Shapiro – Wilk test was used. According to Buyukozturk (2020) if the group size is less than 50, according to Can (2019) if the group size is less than 30, Shapiro – Wilk test should be used to test if the distribution of the data shows a normal distribution or not. As a result of the Shapiro – Wilk test performed by using the SPSS package program, it was seen that the data were in accordance with the normal distribution. For the related samples done in order to determine whether there is a significant difference between the averages of the pre-test and post-test scores of the achievement test, it was observed that there is a significant difference in favor of the post-test as a result of the t-test. After the application, 10 students who were randomly selected among the students who participated in the application were interviewed. For the analysis of the interview data, open coding was done and a code definition table was created. In order to ensure reliability, a copy of all transcripts was given to an expert and another researcher, and they were asked to do the same, and consensus was reached on all codes. As a result of the analysis of the qualitative data, it was seen that the students expressed positive opinions.
