Nostalgic trams constitute significant components of urban cultural heritage while continuing to serve as functional modes of public transportation. This study examines how nostalgic trams contribute to the cultural sustainability of cities, promote relationships among diverse people, and shape the spatial experience of the journey. The study focuses on the nostalgic tram networks of Istanbul and Lisbon using a comparative case study methodology. The data were gathered through field observations, document analysis, and visual examination of the tram lines and their surroundings. According to the data, nostalgic trams have contributed to social relationships, the preservation of cultural identity, and the link between past and present urban life. The findings indicate that nostalgic tram lines enrich the urban experiences of both residents and visitors while making a significant contribution to cultural sustainability. As one of the first points of interaction with the city in everyday life, nostalgic trams play an important role in shaping perceptions of place and fostering connections between people and the urban memory. By safeguarding these moving historical assets, urban planners and policymakers can ensure that the dynamic heritage of cities like Istanbul remains accessible and relevant for future generations. Furthermore, the study highlights the necessity of integrating cultural landmarks within public transit planning to maintain urban identity against rapid modernization. Ultimately, nostalgic trams function not merely as vehicles, but as active participants in the ongoing narrative of the urban landscape.
