Abstract


LONELINESS SCALE, SOLITUDE SCALE AND SOCIAL ISOLATION SCALE: DEVELOPMENT AND INITIAL VALIDATION STUDIES

This study was conducted to define, explain and measure to the three structurs, loneliness, solitude and social isolation which comprise the multidimensional experience of loneliness. For this purpose, three different application were carried out. Eighteen expert psychologists participated in the first part, which consisted of two stages, in order to evaluate the items. 488 inviduals (46.1% men and 53.9% women) participated in the second application and the item pool (total 163 items for three scales) was applied in this part. After second application, 14 items for Lonelines Scale and Social Isolation Scale and 11 items for Solitude Scale were selected. 196 inviduals (41.8% men and 58.2% women) were participated in the third application. In this part, loneliness, depression, well-being with different dimensions, self-esteem and personality measurement with the Five Factor Model were included. In this application, internal consistency reliability coefficient was calculated as 0.88 for Loneliness Scale, 0.82 for Solitude Scale, and 0.92 for Social Isolation Scale. It was observed that the developed scales showed relationships in the expected direction with other measurements. As a final stage, the total scores of scales were compared in terms of socio-demographic groups and the results were discussed in line with the relevant literature.
