Abstract


RISKS AND MEASURES THAT CAN BE TAKEN BY NON-STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS IN HOUSING INDOOR DURING EARTHQUAKES

Throughout history, earthquakes are one of the disasters that cause the most devastating effects on humans and other living things. A large part of Turkey's territory is located in areas with high seismic risk, and the population is concentrated in this region. This situation emphasizes that earthquake has an important place in our lives and we need to learn to live with this reality. The effect of earthquake in buildings creates various risks such as causing loss of life and property, causing injuries, stopping ongoing activities, creating a fire hazard depending on structural and non-structural elements. Risks related to structural elements including the carrier system such as columns, beams, floors, load-bearing walls and foundations of the building can be reduced with the use of appropriate materials, quality workmanship, correct engineering practices and developing regulations and standards. There is no national technical specification and regulation for the risks related to non-structural elements other than the main carrier system of the building. However, it is observed that the simplest and most profitable measures to be taken before the earthquake in reducing the large scale loss of life property and injuries that may be encountered after the earthquake is to reduce the damages due to non-structural elements. The risks and damages caused by earthquakes, whose location, time and intensity are not known exactly, attract more attention in residences because of they are the places where people spend the most time during the day. In addition to the damages and losses caused by the structural elements in the houses, the more damages and losses caused by the non-structural elements require awareness of the risks of these elements and the measures that can be taken against them. The risks and damages that may be caused by walls, ceilings, windows, lighting elements, furniture and equipment, which are the main non-structural elements in residences have been determined and measures varying depending on each element are specified.
