Abstract


MEDIATING ROLE OF DEFENSE MECHANISMS BETWEEN DARK TRIAD PERSONALITY TRAITS AND CHILDHOOD MENTAL TRAUMAS

This study aims to find out the possible effects of childhood traumas on defense mechanisms that are developed by individuals who have dark triad personality traits, Narcissism, Machiavellianism, and Psychopathy. In this study, there are 205 participants, all of them over 18 years old (131 women and 74 men). As data collection tools, Short Dark Triad Scale, Childhood Mental Traumas Scale, Defense Mechanism Test, and Demographic Information Form were used. As a result, there was not any meaningful effect of the Childhood Mental Traumas Scale on Dark Triad Personality Scale. According to the correlation analysis which was implemented from the results of the total scores of the scales, there was a moderate level of relationship between the Dark Triad Scale and the Defense Mechanism Scale. As another subject of the study, there was not any significant relationship between Childhood Mental Traumas Scale and Dark Triad Personality Scale. Same way, according to the results of the study there was not any relationship between Defense Mechanism Scale and Childhood Mental Traumas Scale as well.
