Abstract

The Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation in Labour Market in Turkey

In the labour market, one of the fields where discrimination is most commonly experienced, discrimination based on gender, disability and age find a larger place for themselves in the studies and social policies; on the other hand, discrimination based on sexual orientation has started at a later period and become the subject of a more limited number of studies. This case restricts the awareness, publicity and sensitivity to the discrimination based on sexual orientation. Discrimination based on sexual orientation at labour markets produces negative effects on the markets concerned and the economies of the countries in direct and indirect ways. Discrimination in employment based on sexual orientation affects these individuals’ decisions to participate in the labour market; also inequality in wages and injustice in promotions causes the marginal productivity to fall and the motivation and satisfaction to decrease. The purpose of this study is to determine the sources of the problems faced by the individuals in participation in labour market in Turkey from the perspective of sexual orientation and by those who are already included in the labour market in their working life. Toward this end, discrimination based on sexual orientation has been explained in the study; the dimension and sources of discrimination based on sexual orientation in turkey have been evaluated in the light of the findings of labour force surveys, national and international statistical reports concerning the discrimination and empirical studies into the discrimination based on sexual orientation at various sectors. However, there are not enough databases and studies into the discrimination based on sexual orientation from the aspect of labour force at labour market in Turkey, for which it is necessary to emphasize the difficulty of making a realistic evaluation. Despite these limitations, the way of preventing discrimination based on sexual orientation at labour markets and business world is the acknowledgement of the very fact that all the employees are different but have equal rights in spite of their differences. It is thought in this regard that basic training to be offered on discrimination, anti-discrimination laws to be issued and the supervision of these laws as well as the trainings to be delivered to the business world can diminish this discrimination.
