Metamorphosis In The Works Of Franz Kafka And Bruno Schulz

Franz Kafka was born in Prague in 1883 and is considered one of the most important literary figures of the 20th century. He reflects his existential problems by individuals who cannot keep up with the society or by humanizing other creatures. The term Kafkaesque, derived from Kafka's writing style, is now used for the combination of concepts such as alienation, hopelessness, meaninglessness and fear. All these concepts actually define the state of mind of adult individuals in the early 20th century. Many researchers and theoreticians regards Kafka as the literary precursor of existentialism movement. Jewish origined-Polish writer Bruno Schulz was born in 1892 in Drohobycz. He spent most of his life as a teacher of painting in his hometown. The author, who is introduced to the literary community by Zofia Nałkowska, published in 1934 his book, Cinnamon Shops. In 1938 he was honored with the award by the Polish Academy of Literature. The narrator of the stories in Cinnamon Shops is Józef as the reflection of the author. Although this character and acts provide sections from the author's own life, they are not directly related to the real world. He interprets the method he uses in these stories blended with surreal acts as the mythization of reality. Forced to live in the ghetto after World War II began, Schulz was shot dead by a German officer in 1942. In this study the Metamorphosis of Franz Kafka and Cinnamon Shops of Polish writer Bruno Schulz will be compared.
