Abstract

Assessment Of Time Management And Academic Success: The Case Of Vocational School Of Health Services

The aim of this study is to examine the time management skills of students studying in the Vocational School of Health Services of Harran University and to determine the correlation of time management with their academic success. This study will make it possible to reveal the weaknesses of students by examining their time management skills and accordingly to make suggestions to students concerning effective time management. Face-to-face interview method was used in the descriptive study. The population of the study consisted of 350 students studying in the Vocational School of Health Services in Harran University. The study was conducted between 1 and 31 May 2016. 318 students were given questionnaires and 89% of the students (283) filled in the questionnaire. In order to measure the time management skills of the vocational school students in the study, the Time Management inventory (TMI) developed by Britton and Tesser (1991) and adapted into Turkish by Alay and Koçak (2002) was used. The Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of the scale used in the study was found to be 0.854. Total mean score of time management was 3.17. While the correlation coefficient between the grade point average and only the grade point average of the previous term was statistically significant; the correlation coefficient between the grade point average and the other variables was not statistically significant. Additionally, the fact that the correlation coefficient between the variables of time planning and total time management was 0.928 indicated that there was a very high positive correlation between these two variables. As a result of the study, it was found that the mean time management was at moderate level and the time management of the students had a statistically significant effect on their academic success. When examining the mean scores, it was observed that the male students had higher mean scores than the female students in all the subscales. In addition, there was a statistically significant difference in subscales of the time planning and time traps in terms of the department of the students.
