Abstract

Examination of the Role of Self-Esteem and Body Image in Explaining Perceived Mobbing at Work

In this study, it was aimed to examine the role of self-esteem and body image in explaining perceived mobbing at work. For this purpose, the relationship between mobbing, self esteem, and body image was investigated and different socio-demographic groups were compared in terms of their levels of perceived mobbing. A total of 442 people, 223 female and 219 male have participated in the study. Participants were selected on the basis of an inclusion criterion which was specified as working at a job for more than a year. It was determined that 165 people have been working in the public sector and 277 in the private. The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory, the Two Dimensional Body Image Scale and the A Mobbing Scale were administered to participants. With the aim of predicting mobbing scores regression analyses were performed in the first place and afterwards, the relations between the constructs were demonstrated through path analysis. Finally, socio-demographic variables were compared using the analysis of covariance. Results of the regression analyses reveal that the strongest predictor of perceived mobbing is self-esteem. In addition, path analysis suggests that body image has an indirect effect on mobbing through self-esteem. It was determined that people with low self-esteem, poor body image, and bad economic conditions have greater mobbing scores and were identified as risk groups. It was observed that age and working years have no significant effect on exposure to mobbing.
