Abstract


Views Of Primary School Teachers On Reading Attitude And Reading Habits

Teachers have to develop a positive attitude towards reading, to be involved in activities that will improve themselves in the field of reading, and to gain positive attitudes and habits towards reading. The teacher, who develops himself on good attitude and habit towards reading, will be a positive role model for his students. This research aims to determine the attitudes of primary school teachers towards reading and their reading habits. Qualitative method was used in the research. Qualitative data were collected by focus group interviews. In the 2017-2018 academic years, a focus group interview was held with 10 teachers working in public schools in Ankara. As a result of the study, it is seen that primary school teachers' views on reading are positive. Teachers generally stated that they did not read enough books due to reasons such as excessive home and workload, lack of libraries, negative attitude towards reading, financial difficulty, lack of reading habit, and active social media use. It is seen that primary school teachers generally do not prefer to read books in noisy environments and individual and environmental factors affect their reading. In addition, it was determined that primary school teachers perceive social media as the reason for their lack of reading.
