Abstract

SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF RISK AND HAZARD CONCEPT: THE CONTINUITY OF VITAL INSECURITY IN THE CONTEXT OF RISK SOCIETY THEORY AND COVID-19

In the process from past to present, humanity has faced many risks, dangers and threats that have managed to exist and have not yet existed, such as war, terrorist attacks and epidemics. For this reason, the desire to protect life safety, in other words, the desire to be safe, has become an important need that must be met for all humanity, regardless of any class, group or race. When the desire to protect life safety, in other words, the need to be safe is evaluated in the context of today, it has been understood that it has become the main necessity to be met due to the Covid-19 epidemic. Based on these thoughts, the desire to protect life safety or the desire to be safe has not fallen off the agenda in every period of human history, helping to maintain vital insecurity. In today's context, the last event that threatens the life safety of humanity has been the emergence of the "Covid-19" epidemic, as it is called in the literature. Ulrich Beck's "Risk Society Theory" is one of the important theories in terms of understanding the effects of the Covid-19 virus in the social field in today's society and epidemics. Because, in the literature, this theory has emerged as one of the important sources used to better understand the various sources of risk, threat and danger in today's societies. In this article, using the historical scanning model and document analysis technique, the reasons for the insecurity in life that have survived from the past to the present and the social problems it creates are evaluated in the context of “the risk society theory” that Ulrich Beck brought to social sciences.
