Abstract

EXAMINATION OF STATE AND TRAIT ANXIETY IN CANCER PATIENTS

The general purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between the state and trait anxiety of cancer patients and the variables of age, gender, education level, current cancer stage of the patient, and the time elapsed since the patient was diagnosed with cancer. The study group of the research consists of 175 adult cancer patients receiving cancer treatment in Istanbul between the years 2020-2021. "Personal Information Form" and "State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI)" were used in the research. While 93 of the cancer patients participating in the study were female and 82 were male, the average age of the participants was 49.4. The research was designed in accordance with the relational screening model. Pearson Product Moments Correlation Coefficient was used to understand whether there is a significant relationship between the variables and, if there is, to determine the level of this relationship. In addition, Independent Groups t-Test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques were used to determine whether there was a statistically significant difference between the groups. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the state and trait anxiety of female cancer patients was significantly higher than that of male patients. In addition, a negative and significant relationship was found between the state and trait anxiety of cancer patients and the age of the patients. On the other hand, it was found that the patients' state and trait anxiety did not differ statistically significantly according to the education level of cancer patients, the current cancer stage and the time elapsed since the diagnosis of cancer.
