Abstract

THE IMPORTANCE OF TURKEY FOR EU IN THE CONTEXT OF ENERGY SUPPLY SECURITY: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSE

Energy is an increasing necessity and input for social and economic development. The aim of national energy policies are having uninterrupted, cheap, environmentally friendly energy. To provide energy supply security is one the most important provision for sustainable economic growth and development. EU is one of the most energy consumer regions of the world although it does not have enough energy sources. Turkey is a critical actor for EU energy policies because of two factors. One of them is the geopolitical location of the country that connects energy producer Asia and energy consumer Europe. The second factor is that Turkey is a possible member of the EU, so it should have been adaptable to EU energy policies. The aim of the study is to make a comparison between Turkey and EU in the context of energy supply security. To reach this goal, an energy supply security index is calculated. As a result, Turkey is 21th of 27 EU countries in energy supply security performance. Turkey should increase energy supply security score for EU integration.
